The Research Wise organized a comprehensive 5-day online workshop titled Qualitative Research & ATLAS.ti across weekends on December 13, 14, 20, 21, and 27, 2025. Led by esteemed resource persons Dr. Ajay Kumar Gupta (Professor, VES Business School, Mumbai) and Ms. Aditi Bhardwaj (Assistant Professor, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai), the workshop engaged over 100+ participants in deep-dive discussions and practical training covering qualitative paradigms, fieldwork immersion, ethical protocols, and computer-assisted data analysis.
Agenda
Day 1
Theoretical Foundations & Epistemological Approaches: Participants explored core qualitative paradigms, contrasting qualitative with quantitative methodologies, understanding realism versus nominalism in research perspectives, and addressing fundamental ethical considerations when entering the field.
Day 2
Observational Techniques & Fieldwork Dynamics: The session focused on primary data collection methods, emphasizing participant observation, covert studies, observational bias, and the strategic use of field diaries and in-depth research interviews.
Day 3
Positionality, Ethics & ATLAS.ti Basics: Attendees examined positionality, reflexivity, and thick description in context-specific field research. The session concluded with an introduction to ATLAS.ti, covering project setup, verbatim transcription, and initial conceptual coding.
Day 4
Data Management, Mixed Methods & Advanced Coding: Participants covered mixed-methods sequencing, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) design, and advanced ATLAS.ti workflows, including manual versus AI-assisted coding, code merging, thematic identification, and visual analytics.
Day 5
Participatory Methods, Case Studies & Synthesis: The workshop wrapped up by examining focus groups and case study dynamics, knowledge construction, and hands-on participatory tools like social mapping, transects, ranking exercises, and community immersion strategies.
