The Research Wise organized an intensive Four-Day Online Workshop on Digital Data Collection using KoboToolbox & SurveyCTO on June 20, 21, 27, and 28, 2026. Led by agricultural research and digital data systems expert Amrita Pal (Associate Manager, ICRISAT), the workshop engaged over 100+ participants in transitioning from traditional paper-based methods to robust, open-source digital survey pipelines. The program provided practical, end-to-end training covering XLSForm design, mobile application deployment, data security, and real-time High-Frequency Checks (HFCs).
Agenda
Day 1
Ecosystems & Architecture: Guest speaker Dr. Manzoor Dar (ICRISAT) highlighted the role of digital data credibility in research. Participants explored ODK-based survey advantages over paper methods, learned the 3-sheet XLSForm structure (survey, choices, settings), and set up KoboToolbox accounts.
Day 2
Survey Logic & Quality Control: Attendees practiced digitizing diverse question types, implementing relevant skip logic, writing calculate fields for automated metrics (e.g., BMI, date-of-birth age calculations), and structuring repeat groups for longitudinal/household data
Day 3
Deployment & Server Security: The session covered deploying XLSForms via Enkito preview and configuring mobile devices using QR codes. The trainer detailed key platform differences between KoboToolbox and SurveyCTO, focusing on role-based user access, encrypted transmission, and non-master credential sharing.
Day 4
Monitoring & Live Dashboards: The workshop concluded with High-Frequency Checks (HFCs) for near real-time field data monitoring. Using Google Sheets and Pivot Tables (alongside an overview of R/RShiny), participants learned to track survey durations, detect enumerator bias, flag skip-logic abuse, and manage automated API data syncs.
