The Research Wise hosted a 5-Day Online Workshop on the Basics of Stata from March 19th to 23rd, led by Rashmi (Research Scientist, IIPS, India) and Ronak Paul (Research Officer, GATS, India). The interactive session brought together over 80 active participants, guiding them through the complete Stata research pipeline from interface fundamentals and data cleaning to advanced visualization and econometrics.
Agenda
Day 1
Participants set up their working environment, executed essential commands like 'display' and 'describe', and established reproducible workflows using Do-files, Log-files, and directory organization.
Day 2
The session covered dataset loading (auto.dta), data browsing, missing value identification, value labeling, variable formatting, and output customization using conditional operators.
Day 3
Attendees practiced importing data from Excel, SPSS, SAS, and text files, resolved common Java and path errors, set subsetting rules, and applied variable labels alongside basic 'generate' and 'replace' operations.
Day 4
Participants executed dataset merges (1:1, 1:m, m:1) and appends, managed variable recoding, generated group summary statistics using 'egen' and 'tabstat', and ran cross-tabulations with Chi-Square tests.
Day 5
The final day focused on building and exporting customized graphs, conducting parametric tests (T-tests, ANOVA), and fitting linear and logistic regression models to interpret real-world coefficients and odds ratios.
