This live, 10-hour workshop spread across five days provided researchers, public health professionals, and development sector analysts with practical skills in geographic information systems (GIS) using ArcGIS - the industry-standard spatial analysis platform used across government, international development, and academic research. The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Subhojit Shaw, a consultant at the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), New Delhi, with expertise in spatial data analysis, disaster risk mapping, and public health geography. Participants worked with datasets relevant to their fields - mapping health facility catchment areas, district-level indicator distribution, WASH access gaps, and demographic variables across Indian states. 70+ participants were trained.

Day 1
Introduction to GIS & ArcGIS — what GIS is and why it matters for research, ArcGIS interface, coordinate systems and projections, loading and navigating spatial data
Day 2
Working with Spatial Data — shapefiles, raster data, and geodatabases, importing tabular data with geographic coordinates, joining survey data to spatial layers
Day 3
Spatial Analysis — proximity analysis, spatial joins, density mapping, hot spot analysis, overlaying multiple data layers
Day 4
Thematic Mapping — choropleth maps, proportional symbol maps, publication-quality map design, legend and layout design
Day 5
Applied Exercise — participants mapped a real public health or development dataset, producing a complete spatial analysis suitable for a research report
